home performance to a science

Brain (Portland, Oregon resident) had a very large heating system (100,00 BTU's) that would come on make the house warm fairly quickly and then go off leaving the house to get cold very quickly. The system was loud and smelled bad. Even the neighbors would complain.
One day, in the middle of winter, the heater packed in…
Brian called in five contractors to look at his furnace before finally settling on Revival Energy. He chose us because he said we were the only ones that looked at the whole house to solve the problem.
We first took the heating system apart and confirmed the problem was not a simple fix (a new system was indeed needed). Then we did a full energy audit of the home. The audit revealed that the 100,000 BTU system the house had was far more energy than was needed to be perfectly comfortable. The house had been recently updated with insulation and the heat load calculation determined it only needed a 40,000 BTU system.
The disturbing thing about this case was that Brian told us of the five contractors we were the only ones that did the heat load calculation.
He got bids for 100,000 BTU systems and higher… bids that without a heat load calculation were simply guesses.
The energy audit looks at the home as a whole – examining insulation, air leakage, room size, where windows face, the amount of sunlight etc. The energy audit takes all these data points and using our software determines the exact BTU’s (energy) required to heat or cool the home – which then can be matched to the perfect system.
We recommended a high efficiency two stage system with a maximum of 40,000 BTUs and a little air sealing (which added with the insulation would keep the heat generated inside the home). This made us by far the cheapest bid, but that was because we were able to perfectly size the system for the home.
Brian couldn’t be happier… he saved a lot on the installation and the new system is quiet and keeps his home perfectly comfortable. He has no more noise or smell for the neighbors to complain about and his home heats up nicely and stays comfortable throughout the day. The new system also saves him a lot of his utilities – what’s not to love.
What is more, the new system is not as strained (with the constantly turning on and off) and so will last much longer.
We were able to test after the work was done to prove the impact and gurantee our results.
